Assignment #1- The Crucible
After our class discussion of the historical background of "The Crucible", you are responsible for finding one good website that contains information relevant to the Salem witch trials. On the classroom Blog, you must post at least a five sentence discription of the website and how the information aides in the understanding of the plot of "The Crucible" as well as a link to the site. The website must be reliable (ie- come from a university website, historical society, etc) not just Spark Notes or some equivelant. After finding your own website and discussing its significance, you must visit a website posted by a classmate and write two to three sentences about the relevance of the information on this second site. The assignment is due two days after the class discussion on the history of the Salem witch trials to give you a sufficient amount of time to complete the assignment thoroughly and learn from it.

I found a useful webisite through Washington State University. The following link goes to the web page that contains so much good information that helps me understand the circumstances of "The Crucible": http://www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit/witch.htm . There is a paragraph of background information that describes how witch trials had gone on in New England before the infamous ones in Salem. Also there is a paragraph telling about who the accused people were in the Salem trials. I found it interesting that the men convicted of witchcraft were often the husband's of women who were convicted witches. There is also a discussion of some of the economic and social reasons for the witch hunt.
I visited Liz's website as well. She posted a link to a page on the University of Virginia's website. Her page included links to original documents from the trials as well as maps of the area in New England that the Salem trials took place. The maps are helpful in getting a better mental picture of where all this took place.
